Sorry, that wasn't the m4 problem on Solaris, it was the system
version being picked up after the GNU version had been accepted
that caused the problem.

Add advice to avoid Solaris 10 m4.

Tidy up and move the platform notes here (more accessible).

Update to describe the gfortran position.

In the `Further Information' section, mention SUN/248 and the
development mailing list.

Change the way that autoreconf is run:
  bootstrap now substitutes %%PREFIX%% into new configure.ac.in, to
    produce configure.ac;
  it does that before running autoreconf, rather than afterwards;
  so configure.ac has been removed (see the Attic for its history) and
    configure.ac.in has been created -- the two are essentially
    identical.
Added notes about this to README.

Add a quick note about gfortran and g95.

Include a description of where to find a built version of SSN/78, and
  mention the FAQs within it.
Note that `make world' will not rebuild an updated CVS checkout.
Minor reformatting

Preen the instructions, in particular removing the remark that shared
  libraries don't work on OS X.

clarify comment on etc/login

Added comment warning about effects of /star/etc/login and /star/etc/cshrc on build, I ran into this while building despite not have STARLINK defined, or /star in my PATH

Include a warning about the F77 environment variable, drawing
  attention to the fact that the default IRAF install sets F77 to an
  unhelpful value.

Add instruction to 'make configure-deps'

Minor tweaks to bring up to date.

Explain about setting CFLAGS and LDFLAGS in the environment, to help
  ./configure find software in /opt, for example.

Added comment about disabling shared library builds

Note that the non-buildsupport bin directory should also go in the
path.

Emphasise that the buildsupport/bin directory should be added to the
  path before bootstrapping

The build-everything command is now `make world' rather than just
  `make'.  This follows a change in Makefile.in, today, adding this
  target and changing the default one.

Added a note on autoreconf

Previous instructions were for a build of the whole tree.  Emphasised
  this, and added distinct instructions for building a single component.
Changed /export3/sun to /local-star: `sun' in this context more readily
  suggests `solaris' than `local star' (boom-boom).
